From Strategy to Action in the Infrastructure Sector

January 31, 2021Impact Stories

The goal of our first meeting was to translate that five-year plan into a strategy for sustained growth and innovation. We proposed an objective approach for the cross-sectional analysis of the company's innovation maturity. This course of action allows for the identification of short-term opportunities.

The innovation strategy improvement process consists of two consecutive phases:

Phase 1: Analysis

Our team of consultants conducted a study on innovation maturity. Afterwards, they determined opportunities for improvement and finally uncovered quick wins that could be executed.

Measuring Innovation Maturity

According to Brad Kelley, innovation speaker, trainer, and change specialist, it is crucial to understand an organization's innovation maturity level. The company must first master a set of core capabilities before implementing more advanced innovation projects. Every company needs to make its idea generation, evaluation, and commercialization work well before launching an extended growth plan.

Benchmarking

In this phase, we benchmarked the company against industry leaders. Then, we identified out-of-sector or indirect competitors to gain insights from beyond the sector. The goal was to align C-level objectives with the new innovation model.

Focusing on High-Impact, Actionable, and Quick Wins

In a recent Inc. article, the author writes about the importance of establishing quick wins to boost morale and maintain momentum. It validates the new way of doing things and reaffirms to teams that they are on the right path toward organizational transformation.

Phase 2: Implementation

We developed an innovation roadmap. A portfolio rollout was conducted with all managers. Our consultants will implement the projects selected by the client using agile methodologies.

At this stage, we organized co-creation workshops with employees to define the innovation vision, strategy, and objectives. Other activities included:

Definition of the communication plan;
Co-creation of the innovation process;
Implement innovation-related performance objectives.
The project proved to be a success. Check out the blog for more news on the collaboration in this project.
