The history of the vaccine dates back a long way. In 1976, the physician, Edward Jenner, tried to inoculate an eight-year-old boy with a small amount of bovine smallpox-infected material. Months later, he injected the virus into the vhild and found that he had developed immunity. Although they were initially dismissed by sceptics, the vaccines are now a success story. The World Health Organisation (WHO) figures corroborate this growing trend in longevity: humans are living on average six years longer than at the beginning of this century, with the average life expectancy now standing at 73 years.
