This highly ambitious and impact-driven challenge is spearheaded by the Joint European Disruptive Initiative and brings together donors and partners from the public and private sectors to support teams participating from all around the world. This collaborative, Open Science effort seeks to ultra-fast-track therapeutic treatments for Covid-19. 

The GrandChallenge is divided into three stages and teams can participate in one or multiple stages. Stage 1 will produce an ultimate list of lead compounds by screening a billion molecules against SARS-CoV-2. This modeling of active molecules, at a scale never seen before, will determine a highly accurate list of active compounds cross-correlated by the best teams in the world. Around 4 weeks after the completion of stage 1, stage 2 will identify compounds that lead to 99% viral suppression. Stages 1 and 2 will each last 33 days and offer 250,000 Euros for the top-ranked team in each stage. 

Stage 3 will start according to the results of previous stages and seeks to find an immediately usable drug cocktail to treat Covid-19. Up to 1,000,000 Euros are offered for the top-ranked team that experimentally screens combinations of FDA-approved compounds and demonstrates synergistic effects.
